Woof Ball

Fri, 09/05/2008 - 07:48

For some reason this looked like a woot ball to me this morning.  Maybe I've been looking at woot.com too much.

Orbee-Tuff balls that speak your dog's language. These super tuff Orbees are sure to last for even the toughest chewers. They aren't textured like the original Orbee balls, but instead have a smooth exterior and raised lettering. Is it time to play yet?? What exactly is Orbee-Tuff?

Samsung Instinct, Video, and Ubuntu

Fri, 09/05/2008 - 07:30

I've figured out how to transcode videos for the Samsung Instinct using ffmpeg.  The initial problem I had is the standard Ubuntu version of ffmpeg does not include aac support.  Fortunately Medibuntu has an ffmpeg package with everything enabled.  You'll need to add the medibuntu repositories to your system first.  ffmpeg didn't want to upgrade, so I used apt-get to remove it and install it.   Be sure you have libfaac installed too.

To verify that you've got the right ffmpeg, run 'ffmpeg -version' and look for –enable-libfaac.  If you don't see it in the listed configuration then the following won't work.

Once you have the right ffmpeg you can transcode a video with something like this:

ffmpeg -i BeerBot.avi -acodec aac -ab 128k -vcodec mpeg4 -b 1200k -qscale 4 -async 100 -s 320×240   BeerBot.mp4

Throw BeerBot.mp4 into the MEDIA directory on the SD card, and it will appear in TV/Video, My Videos, Sideloaded.  You may need to change the scale (-s flag) if your video has a different aspect ratio.  You can go up to 432×240 for wide screen videos.

If you are curious which video I was converting, you can see a version of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDN-OSffLAE

Twitter is like

Tue, 09/02/2008 - 21:58

Last summer I was introduced to Twitter at SXSW.  At the time I really didn't get it.  I've now been using Twitter a lot to keep in touch with the GeekDads.  Maybe, I have an analogy that will explain it some of the old school geeks like me.

"Twitter is like a huge IRC channel where everyone is /ignore by default."

Feel free to quote me on that.

I'm Wii Unfit

Tue, 09/02/2008 - 20:14

We just got a Wii Fit, and my Wii Fit age is 48.  Ouch, time to do something about that.  I've set a lofty goal of 5 pounds a week, we'll see if I can keep that up.

» Best picture quality with 6 megapixels!

» Best picture quality with 6 megapixels!.

It’s not true(!!!), we have to say when it comes to compact cameras. We, the staff of Image Engineering which is an independent testing laboratory that, amongst other things, tests digital camera for the German magazines Color Photo and c’t. Quite a while ago we noticed that the image quality of digital cameras was getting worse instead of better. The reason is that today’s sensors are divided into more and therefore smaller pixels. We want to clarify the consequences on this website.

A good look at the Megapixel Myth.  More is not better.  I've noticed this in a lot of the cheap P&S cameras.  12MP on a teeny tiny sensor just does not work.  Given their calculations, APS sized DSLRs should be able to go 37 MP.  However, the small cell phone sensors should have stopped at 2.7MP.

What Do You Do?

Fri, 08/29/2008 - 22:23

What do you tell people when they ask what you do?  I've most recently answered that I am a Web Developer.  For some strange reason this leads them to ask: "Hey, can you fix my email?"  I usually just answer with "um, no." and change the subject.

I've got a couple of easier answers these days.  I'll occasionally tell them I'm a blogger, but that gets strange looks, and or the above mentioned email question.  The most recent and certainly my favorite answer now is that I build robots.  While that isn't really my job, I do get to build robots, and I have access to our lab after work and on weekends so it isn't a lie.  So far only one person has asked me to fix their robot.

Vice President I'd Like to What?

Fri, 08/29/2008 - 15:50

It sure didn't take long for someone to think Palin was hot and create VPILF.com.

Also, heard on twitter earlier: Does McCain know that if Palin gets hurt in a car accident that he can't trade her in for a richer, younger, hotter VP?

Also, did you see she seriously thinks creationism should be taught in science class?
