Labyrinth Work Continues

Submitted by rlp on Tue, 03/11/2008 - 12:19.

Paul Soupiset has a video online of our ongoing work on a prayer labyrinth at the back of our church property. It should definitely be done before anyone arrives this summer for the retreats. The video has a few people in it you've read about here.

Paul and his daughters, who narrate it.

My youngest daughter Lillian is the one with glasses who shoves her face in the camera and tries her best to sound stupid. She's the one I wrote about in those two bifocals pieces so long ago.

My middle daughter Shelby is the one who runs at the camera.

Chloe is practically all grown up now and wearing the pink rubber boots.

Tim, aka Tom, is the man in black coming down the path. His daughter is wearing the party hat. She spent the night at our house that weekend. I think she wore that hat non-stop from Friday through Monday.

And I, dear readers, star as the Grinch who stole the joy from all the children who were laboring so hard on the labyrinth. I really was embarrased when I saw this. There are all these flower children, dressed in such unique and cool ways, out there working away. And you're thinking, "Wow, this might be the coolest church EVER." Then you see the pastor dressed in the most uptight, "white guy" clothes imaginable, marching in to spoil the party. So then you think, "No, it's pretty much like every church I've ever been to."

Sorry. Sorry everyone. Carry on. Please do ignore the dreary man in the pastel shirt! ;-)

What I really like about this is our prayer path through the woods and the labyrinth at the back has been built almost exclusively by children. Very nice. It looks rather brown and dreary right now, but in a month or so, everything back there will be lush and green.

Sound, where's the sound?

I don't get any audio when I play. Video is fine but not sound.

Hmm not sure

Paul here. I did the video... Not sure why you can't hear it. I'll be interested to see if the audio codex (not even sure if that's the right term) is Mac-optimized? Can some of you other PC users check in and let me know if you are having audio problems as well?

I can re-export maybe tomorrow night.

Sound

I'm on a Mac, and I couldn't hear it either. :/

Funny, I can hear it okay.

Funny, I can hear it okay. Paul how about you? Anyone else?

Wild shot in the dark... Was it exported as a dependent movie, and the two of you (Paul and rlp) both have access to the audio portion?

Weird. I have no explanation

Weird. I have no explanation for the inconsistency.

I'll find a way around this tonight. Probably upload the .mov file to google video.

Great video!

OK, that blows my

OK, that blows my theory.

Next theory is it was made with a more recent codec than those of us with 10.4.11 have.

I think you're right -- this

I think you're right -- this is a OS 10.4 vs. 10.5 problem for mac users. It works on my mac at home (10.5), but not on the one at work (10.4). If I open it on the home computer and convert the audio from AAC-LD to AAC-LC (what?), it plays just fine on both.

no sound here either.

For anybody who got the audio working, does anybody know what song that is at the beginning of the video?

Well Gordon, been there done

Well Gordon, been there done that!

My wife and I and three other couples with assorted children were charged with the task of creating a labyrinth much like yours. I was the "creative director" for the project. After many hours of research and thought on design we finally had a plan. We chose an abandoned building spot at our retreat facility. The building still had a roof and the concrete slab but the walls had been removed years earlier, so we decided to paint the lines on the floor.

We drove up late one Friday night and thought we could at least get the chalk layout done before midnight. First mistake! After 5 hours on our knees on concrete our pastor decided the path needed to be wider. Hmm, sound familiar? Anyway after much negotiation we were able to re-draw the layout and hit the plastic mattresses by 3am.

Up at 6:30, tossed back some stale pastries, cold coffee and Tylenol and then hit the concrete for another fun filled day of applying colored mason stain to approximately 3 miles of line work. Just as we saw the end in sight I was demoted from creative director to head whiner as we were asked to change the color from red to white on half of the design. Have you ever tried to cover up red with white? Three coats, nuff said.

Be gentle with your creative input.

Maybe I've been out of the

Maybe I've been out of the south too long, but I love that shirt, and rarely see its like; I'd call it retro. My church has a strong suit-and-tie contingent and a long tail across different degrees of casual; I think we're blessed that we're not divided by such things.

Blessings to you and yours in this holy season.

no audio here. but, yes, you are a dork.
