I need a title for my book

So, I’ve begun working on a second book. I have to come up with a title so Paul Soupiset can start work on the cover.

I can't think of anything. Well, I thought of one thing, but it wasn't very good. Want to toss some ideas at me?

This book, like the first, will be a collection of my essays and stories. Most have appeared here or at the Christian Century. But, I will include a good number of things I've never published before, including a couple of new RLPDV stories.

I’m publishing it myself, with a little help from my friends. You can read about this at Consafo.com.

What should I call this book? I’m asking for your help. Got any ideas? Those who purchase an advance copy will vote on the title from a selection of possibilities, but I need some title ideas. I really am horrible at titles.

Current Ideas:

“Some Stuff I Wrote” - Mine. I know, pretty lame. But I was under a lot of pressure to come up with something and that’s all I could manage.

“Exegesis” - Jeanene’s idea. (my wife)

“I Think of You as 50 People” - Ralf's idea. Ralf is a friend I met once in real life and have emailed over the years. Little known Ralf fact: He has a cameo appearance in one of the Foy stories.

That’s it so far. Any ideas? Leave them in the comments. I need your help!

Hope you're not offended..

..but something from Monty Python is what occurs to me:

'And now for something completely different..'

'The number of the counting shall be 3..'

'I'm not quite dead yet..'

If you're not a MP fan, won't make sense I guess, but my son got a flying circus season, stuck in that mode. Could come up with hundreds of others, but if your thing, I'm sure there is a perfect one.

Hmm...Jeanene wondered about

Hmm...Jeanene wondered about "I have no title for this" quoting one of the title from an essay in the first book.

"Confessions of a Real Live

"Confessions of a Real Live Preacher"

Although, I like the Monty Python ideas too.

Having the word

Having the word "confessions" in the title might grab the sensationalists' attention. Could be a moneymaker.

How about..."I Was Supposed

How about..."I Was Supposed To Be Anonymous"?

I think of you as 50 people

That's a very intriguing title. It would need a subtitle, perhaps More Musings from Real Live Preacher. Not sure about the suggestion to go without a title - libraries won't know how to catalog it.

I loved how you spoke of "my

I loved how you spoke of "my babies are coming home to me" in your essay on Eerdman's remaindering your first book.

How about (using your own words). . . "Each Creation is Like a Birth"

titles...

Riffing off the above: Real Live Stories and Real Live Ramblings; Untitled Preacher; whatever it is, I'm looking forward to reading it.

You've got so many great

You've got so many great essay titles. Why not borrow one of them for the title of the book as well? Flipping through your back catalog, I see (in no particular order and without looking at the content of each essay):

Searching for Real Live Preacher (chimes with the title of the first book)

Modern Mythology (same resonance as "preacher" and "dot com")

Story, Redemption, and Time (that's what you write about, more or less)

Savage Joy (I love this phrase)

Open Communion (That's sort of what writing a blog is about, right?)

I Gave Myself Away (A theme of many of your essays.)

Body Language of the Soul (Just an appealing image.)

Virtual Pastor (Again, chimes with "preacher" and "dot com", and makes us all your virtual congregation)

A Book of Common Prayer (Perhaps even better shortened to "Common Prayer"? You're all about the democratic kind of faith...)

James, John, and Crazy Joe (says "This is about the gospels and also about real life" to me)

Words Fail Me (Nice irony for a book title, and suits your frequent theme about it being easier to sound good than to be good)

Any of those would be good, I think. Or any of a dozen others. Obviously you don't normally have trouble coming up with strong titles! Of course, using an essay's title might oblige you to include it in the book, and might give it a certain prominence that you might not want... But on the other hand maybe it can give you a sort of starting point, to build around.

Just my thoughts. How about

Just my thoughts. How about "I Was Supposed To Be Anonymous" The subtitle being Real Live Ramblings from Real Live Preacher.

I like a few suggested. How about simply "50 people". I also like 'Virtual Paster' - or 'Virtual Preacher'

How about Real Live Preacher 2.0? Resonates with that whole "Web 2.0" thing...

I also really liked the suggestion of: Exe-Jesus -- Reflections and Ramblings [from Real Live] Preacher

so far from the suggestions

so far from the suggestions I like "I think of you as 50 people," and "I was supposed to be anonymous." w/ some kind of subtitle, maybe. I kindof like Real Live Preacher 2.0, but it's not very captivating for those who don't already know what it is, if that's your audience at all. Who is this title supposed to appeal to? (people who already know your writing, or others?)

I like Exegesis and Exe-Jesus too, but would be afraid of it sending too "academic" of a message, and your approach is too real life for that. Also, it is less personal, less of who you are comes through.

Sadly, I don't have suggestions of my own!

Title

I just wrote this whole long thing, and then I messed up and it didn't get posted. So, I think that was the Universe telling me not to be so verbose. Here is a synopsis:

I think you should call your book, "A Dangerous Man." You used that in reference to Foy, but I think, in many ways, it could also apply to you. I went into a lengthy explanation as to why in my other message, (which is now who knows where), and I don't think I can remember everything I said. But it had something to do with your writing making us think about things that might be uncomfortable, challenging the status quo, looking at both the bitter and the sweet aspects of life, love, and parenthood, and sometimes taking us to places dark and deep in the psyche. Not to mention that you use the "F" word. I know certain people of a particular religious bent who would find you to be a very dangerous man indeed.

So..."that's all I got."

(If the other message does eventually show up, too, I apologize.)

Hmm. Thanks. I appreciate

Hmm. Thanks. I appreciate greatly the idea behind this. I am taking great pains to separate myself from Foy these days. There was a time when people in my life assumed it was basically a biography. I don't want people to think every issue Foy has is mine. Clearly I use a lot of my experiences in writing these stories, but I've built a different life for him. I might not want to blur that line.

Those are from a couple minutes skimming two of your most popular essays. What I'd do is look at the most self-revealing ones and find a place where you already described yourself. The one that sets off associations is the one. FWIW.

"I Think of You as 50

"I Think of You as 50 People" gets my vote. It just seems the most right to me, and it seems perfectly matched with what I have seen of Paul's artistic style. I wish I could explain better how solidly right and bangarang that title feels to me.

Okay, I really, really hate

Okay, I really, really hate to admit this, but I don't get the "I think of you as 50 people." Really sorry, because, I think I might like it if I understood. Am I missing something? Sorry, I am an accountant, so bear with me all you right-brained people.

I wrote something long ago, where I said, A lot of people read this blog, which could be rather intimidating if I think about it. So I think of you as roughly 50 people.

I referred to it a few times over the years, and long-time readers of the blog remember it. Sometimes they have signed comments, "one of the 50."

I believe this was the first time I used that phrase:

Title Suggestion

Hey Preach,

Thought of a title:

Blogiletics

Your old pal from Salon.com,

ppalooza

"Profane and Profound: A

"Profane and Profound: A Second Collection From Real Live Preacher." I mainly like the 'profane and profound' part. I lifted it from Brother to a Dragonfly by Will Campbell... "Thad Garner was, I suppose, the most profane man I have ever met. And, I suppose, in a way he was also the most profound." You're certainly not the most profane man I know, but when I read this in the book you came to mind.

Book Title

How about

"Real Live Preacher 2...
Confessions of an agnostic/misfit-Christian."

I rather like "Story,

I rather like "Story, Redemption, and Time."

On the theme of "I Ain't dead yet" ...

How about just "Not Dead". Kind of riffs off Everlasting Life message of Christianity - could be equally "not dead, yet" or "not dead, ever".

Or maybe I'm just spouting rubbish again (it happens *quite* a lot with me)

book title suggestions

How about:
'Take it home in a brown paper bag' (then you won't have to change the cover)
OR
'Notes from Virgil' (as in "virtual" because you're not really "real live" when we're just reading you)
BUT
Of all the suggestions so far... My vote goes to "I don't have a title for this" (It's funny and it says something about the pressing and instant nature of blogging as a publishing medium)
Cheers!

I like "I think of you as 50 people" and "I don't have a title for this", though I'd lean toward the first, as I'm fairly sure "I don't have a title for this" was included in the original collection and I'd only suggest using a title that hints at one of your essays if that essay is going to be included and it's going to be thematic to the book as a whole.

In any case, I'll be glad to have another collection of your work that I can hold and read when I want to be off the grid.

Just thinking

I'm not sure I'd pick up "I Think of You as 50 People" if I saw it in the bookstore. It may be too "inside." Just my opinion. I like "A Dangerous Man" a lot, as well as the idea behind ITOYA50P. Maybe something like it, but different.

A lot of my favorite authors steal titles from epic poems; Iain M. Banks, for instance; most of his titles come from T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland. Maybe a line from somewhere that calls to and resonates with you?

title

What about "You Name It"? a pun yes, but also, it means there's just about anything and everything in there, AND more than that, it means that you let readers decide the impact of your writing on them without your direction.

and

And it really actually could refer to God, or religious experience, that defies easy labels- "you name it."

I really liked the title of "Hold You Me" - if you are including it in this work, you might call it "Hold You Me (and other stories and essays by Gordin Atkinson)"

Access denied today. I got here through an old link....At least it's saying access denied now, before it was some weird "enter your password" page. Hmmm

two suggestions

Some great ideas here! Here are my two to add to the mix.

- "Not that you asked" - this assumes your blogging, stories and essays are not the result of questions, which some are, but it speaks to me of your sharing something from the inside, rather than something produced to satisfy external requests / realities

I was also thinking there might be something in the piece you wrote quite a while ago (which is printed and on my fridge door at home) that said something to the effect that you are just a guy with a bad haircut at a church I've never heard of, then you go on to say that we should listen to small things and release big things... I thought there might be something in there, but I couldn't that post.

In my searching, I read a way older post and it ended with this line: The mystery and the magic of it.
(from www.reallivepreacher.com/node/908). So that would be my second suggestion:
- "The mystery and the magic of it"

May the mystery and the magic of it continue to be a blessing to you as it is to me,
Jen

- Hold you me (I LOVE that

- Hold you me (I LOVE that suggestion).
- I think of you as 50 people (mixture of in-joke and just intriguing).
- For the love of words (I couldn't find it but I'm sure you had a short piece with that title??)
- Freckles and blue (it's just a beautiful pairing of words!)

Name

After reading your first book, and the titles of your essays, I find it hard to believe that you can't come up with a title for a book. My favorite from "RealLivePreacher.com" is "You Ain't Jesus, Pastor", which I think would've been a great title for that book.

Have you looked through any of the essays, to pick something from what you've already written? I love it when an author tucks the title in somewhere within the text of the book, and you go, "oh, yeah, the 'Weight of Glory', I get it now." But, I'm kind of simple that way.

Here are some of my ideas:
"Can I get an Amen?"
"Out of My Tiny Mind"
"Let Me Say This About That"
"Preaching is Dirty Work"
"If it weren't for Jesus"
"The Incomprehesible Gift of Grace: And Other Things (That) (Astound Me) or
(Don't Make Good Sense) or
(Cool Things About God) or
(Defy Reason)
"Gulping Grace by the Gallon"
"Not So Pretty: Stumbling Toward Grace"
"If Love is From Your Heart, is Hate from your Butt?" (question my daughter asked me a few weeks ago, and I expect to see a blog about this notion soon..he he)
"Hear Ye, Hear Ye"
"Freakshow"
"Marginalized"
"Submissions From the Front Line"
"Can't Shake This Flesh of Mine"
"Have I Said Too Much?"
"Without a Filter"
"Making Things Fit"
"You Ain't Jesus"
