Covenant Stories: A Delightful Collection of Misfits

Story #10 in the Covenant series

One of the unusual things about having church at the Duckblind Lounge was the display of available beers on the bar behind the podium where Kenny and I preached. Some preachers have choirs behind them in beautiful robes. We had Bud, Bud Light, Coors, and Lone Star. The first Sunday we met at Fox Run Elementary school, I stood up to preach and said, “Does anyone else feel uncomfortable here? Doesn’t this place feel strange?” I pulled a beer out of my coat pocket, sat it on the podium, and said, “There, I feel better now. How about you?”

Everyone laughed. I put the beer away, and we got on with the service. I remember thinking, “Yes, these are my people. We’re a bunch of misfits who have nowhere else to go.”...READ MORE at the High Calling Blogs website.

I love these stories,

I love these stories, Gordon! What a wonderful history. I think you are right in what you said about George.

I'm enjoying hearing about

I'm enjoying hearing about the life of Covenant church. I am glad Covenant exists, for all the people who need it just as it is.

I have to say, it is not unusual for one of your stories to bring tears to my eyes, but the comment about George made the tears flow in a "take off my glasses and take a few moments to compose myself" kind of way. I think because:
1) I remember George from when you first wrote about him way back when, and in some strange way I care about this man who died long before I ever heard about him from someone I've never met in person; and
2) I totally believe in that truth of God's strange math -- that one person truly is worth the whole existence of one church.

I am glad Jesus saw fit to tell you this in no uncertain terms, as it is a wondrous and powerful thing to know. Thank you for sharing it with us.

(for the record, I don't find the idea of a preacher using a beer as a prop all that scandalous; but then, I'm not a Baptist!)
