Sacred Callings in a Secular World

August 20-23 is a big event in our lives. Jeanene and I will be joining Milton and Ginger Brasher-Cunningham in leading a retreat at one of my favorite places in the world - Laity Lodge near Kerville Texas, in the Texas hill country.

I've been to Laity Lodge a number of times. I wrote about it here and here and here. I can't tell you how honored I am to be leading a retreat with my wife and friends. Laity Lodge is such a gentle, open, ecumenical place. Every time I go it seems to be life changing.

Our retreat is focusing on people seeing their daily work as a sacred calling. Christians have a problem. We've divided the world into categories of sacred and secular. That's wrong to start with, and it leads to a number of problems. We'll be embracing the idea of honoring your craft and trade, seeing excellence in everything you do, and finding spiritual fulfillment in that simplicity.

You can certainly join us if you like. The retreat is sponsored by Texas Baptists. Details are here, including a link to a registration form and an informational flyer.

Royce Rose is the one who is organizing the retreat. He is a dear friend of ours from back when Jeanene and I were in seminary in the 80s. Honestly, about half of what makes this retreat exciting to me is getting to spend time with Royce. Here's a blog entry by Royce about the retreat.

Milton is a chef. We're working now to see if he can do a live cooking show while we're there. I'll be taking photos and blogging about the whole thing. Possibly live blogging if I can get internet access worked out.

Love to have you join us.

I just got to go to Laity

I just got to go to Laity Lodge for the first time this past May - what a wonderful place it is! I so enjoyed the beauty of the surroundings (natural and human-made).

My former pastor got a call

My former pastor got a call to work at Laity Lodge early this year and moved halfway across the country to do it. Glad for him but miss him sometimes. I can't join you for multiple reasons, but if you see Mark Roberts, tell him "Chris the media guy", along with the rest of IPC, say hi. :)

Hey Chris, I know Mark

Hey Chris,

I know Mark because of the writing and work I do for the High Calling, which is a part of the same non-profit organization that runs Laity Lodge. The HEB Foundation. I may well see him and definitely will say hello from the Christ the media guy if I do.

Beautiful pictures and descriptions of Laity Lodge. My 18 year old daughter is up there right now at the youth camp as a counselor. This is the sixth and final week she'll be there.

Paulo Coelho (author of The Alchemist) maintains a blog and bi-monthly writings that he sends via e-mail. I discovered this archived posting last night about Anonymous Josephs that seems to speak to the vision of the retreat. Are you sure anyone can come to your retreat??? Even post-Baptists? :-)
