Hell Video 2
Here is my second video in the series on hell. In this video, I simply want to record what the New Testament has to say about hell. I give no personal interpretation on the matter. In going through all of your emails and my own study, I created a spreadsheet which you might find helpful. You can get a .pdf version here.
Note: I chose not to deal with a number of passages where, at the end of parables or teachings, Jesus refers to a place of darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. My thinking was this: If you are going to come to an understanding of what the New Testament says about hell, you need to deal with the instances where words translated as hell are used. If you can't make a case for your view of hell with the actual words gehenna and hades, you won't be able to build it on these ambiguous sayings of Jesus. But if you want to find them, run a search through the gospels for "darkness" "weeping" and "gnashing."
One more note: I mention "hadoo" several times. This is the gentive case of the word which is always used, (h)adou. Having read it this way, I just used that form.

Rev 13:8
Submitted by Toby (not verified) on Mon, 10/20/2008 - 23:49.Doesn't Rev 13:8 say that all will worship the beast *except* for those whose names are in the book?
Yeah, I just said it

Uncomfortable.
Submitted by Gary (not verified) on Tue, 10/21/2008 - 09:39.Talk of hell makes me feel very uncomfortable esp. when I attach a verse such as 'He will punish those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus' to my own life. I feel on-edge and anxious. Maybe my philosophy on hell is far from the truth but how does one deal with a mind that finds it tough not to take the bible literally? What are we left with? This is not to my liking; however, it is honestly my obsession to know what life after equates to.
I feel like I'm back in seminary!
Submitted by jimgdaddy (not verified) on Tue, 10/21/2008 - 10:35.Just listened to both the Hell 1 and Hell 2 videos. I felt like I was back in seminary again! (And trust me, that's a compliment, not a put-down.) Being brought into a discussion on a topic which plagues so many preachers (or gives them so much sermon fodder to stir up the masses). Promised, and then given, an overview of the scriptures without much editorializing on the part of the presenter. I can't wait for the third video!
It's been over twenty-five years since I graduated from seminary (that "godless den of iniquity" known as Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta). Some of my classmates thought that the devil himself was trying to destroy their faith through through the words of our professors. I discovered there a place where I could listen, question, and wrestle with my spiritual issues in the company of gifted men and women whose faith was also 'under construction'. God blessed me richly during those years -- and gave me the courage to keep wrestling.
Thank you for providing me with another place to challenge and be challenged by God.

Can't wait until the third video. Why are you worried about the 6-minute time limit? That's the best 11 minutes I've spent all day. And I even went to a church meeting.
Ah, I have tennis elbow.

Submitted by rlp on Tue, 10/21/2008 - 22:13.And thanks for the compliment. But I think shooting for 6 minutes is a good discipline. If I just talked, I'd go on forever. Trying to be minimal and get done within 6 minutes makes me "lean and mean," so to speak. So even if I do go over, it won't be because I was rambling much.
Same with preaching. If you can't say it in 20 minutes, it's probably too much to say in one sitting. And if you take 40 minutes to say what should have been said in 20 minutes, you're going to be losing people.
So if the 11 minutes wasn't boring, it's probably because I was trying to make it short and dense.
James 3:6
Submitted by Simon Cozens (not verified) on Wed, 10/22/2008 - 02:42.I hope you'll cover this verse in detail, because it's fascinating. The Greek literally says "ἡ σπιλοῦσα ὅλον τὸ σῶμα καὶφλογίζουσα τὸν τροχὸν τῆς γενέσεως" - "which pollutes the whole body and sets on fire the wheel of becoming." So, so, so Buddhist.
Simon, What's the verse

What's the verse reference?

It's interesting to me to see how the word mutated. I'm reading Homer, and there it is Ἀΐδης, a slightly irregular third declension noun with genitive Αΐδαο...very notable that there is no H on the front, it's just Aides. Somewhere in there it acquired a rough breathing and became second declension.
