The Movie List Part 2

July 22, 2007 - 10:43pm

Your Recommendations

Here is the list of movies submitted by those commenting on my movie post. Many of these suggestions came with short reviews, so if you want more information about these films, check out the comments from that post.

By the way, if you love movies, you HAVE to subscribe to some kind of online service. You can’t just go to Blockbuster and hope they will have something good. I used Netflix for years, but they started delaying mailing movies to their customers. There was a lawsuit about this. I noticed it was taking longer and longer for movies to arrive. I switched to Blockbuster for several reasons:

1. They are more prompt in sending movies.

2. You can turn in a movie at a store and have it immediately checked in online.

3. They give you a free rental every time you turn one in at a store. (This basically doubles the movies you get for your money) I use the mail service for my serious films and the free movies for stuff my kids want to watch with me.

Okay, now your list. I wish I had time to write my own reviews for some of these, but I’ll settle for a simple rating system:

1 – I’ve seen it.
2 – I’ve seen it and would recommend it.
3 – I’ve seen it and loved it.
4 – This came close to making my list.
5 – This probably should have made my list.

I'm going to repeat a recommendation I made when you asked for movies, a while back: Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro. It's an animated film about two girls whose family moves to the countryside, who meet up with forest spirits. It has only the vaguest semblance of a plot, but it's a beautiful and charming pastorale.

I'll make you a deal: watch this movie, and if you do not love it, I will personally go to your subscriber page and give you $20.00. That's how confident I am.

Saw it. Hated it. Pay up.

Just kidding. I did see it, and liked it. I love Miyazaki's movies. They don't appeal to the average American taste, but I love them. You know, I didn't put any in my to list, and this list is just those that were in the comments. I guess I could keep adding to it. This could be a never-ending thing.

You knew they would keep coming . . .

Shadowlands
Time Bandits
Mr. Ibriham (sp?)
The Dinner Party (only movie I took notes during)

Susan, a Texan in Ohio

Whoops! I meant My Dinner With Andre no the Dinner Party (an art work by Judy Chicago that was also profound) from Susan, the misplaced Texan in Ohio

My husband was taking me to Key West for our anniversary, and on the Key West Express (ferry from Ft. Myers to KW) they showed a movie on the way there:

The Astronaut Farmer

It stars Billy Bob Thornton, and it was really quite good. I had never even heard of it before that trip. I highly recommend it.

I've seen that for sale in the grocery stores lately. Nice to know it's good!

I'd just like to share my observation that THE CONSTANT GARDENER is not a Valentine's Day date movie.

Billy Elliot - I love that movie!

Beautiful Thing - although I had to have a British friend explain the whole class issue with the mom and her boyfriend.

I am so surprised you have never seen Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles. I had no idea a young man could grow up in the 70s/80s without seeing those movies!

Before kids, we always watched Young Frankenstein on Halloween.

I know, it's weird.

My problem with Blockbuster is that they rent edited movies and they're not very forthright about it. There are other alternatives to Netflix, though I also feel Netflix has improved considerably in the last couple of years.

I'm getting ready to go on vacation... do you have a list of books? :-) I really like a novel that has some redmption or grace learned. Last summer I found "Our Lady of Lost and Found."
For some reason I have never gone to the Christian Fiction section. Maybe it's the bookcovers, or maybe it seems too predictable.

So Boondock Saints scores the only 0? I'm thinking that must mean you have a stronger opinion about it than just "naah, doesn't suit my taste in movies". I'm curious...?

Maybe "Overnight (Documentary about Boondock Saints)" also clarifies your feelings about it somewhat?

How about Life as a House? Fantastic movie!

My question RLP is whether you've watched any of the ones you hadn't seen yet? I've made a list of one's I'd like to see now but haven't gotten any yet. I did watch Driving Lessons the other night and then saw Amazing Grace in the theatre last night. Neither really well done films in some ways but I liked both. Driving Lessons was quirky with a great sound track and Amazing Grace was moving.

I read over the list again and think that Dead Man Walking should be on it - don't know why I didn't think of that before. But then this could be an endless project.

Have you thought about doing a novel list? Our Lady of the Lost and Found was a wonderful read. It is a good place to start :-)

Wait, wait, wait...Being There, with Peter Sellers, is or is not on some list? Please tell me I missed it, and it's up there somewhere. C'mon, it's a classic. (It's there, right?)

If you like Big Fish that much, you should run out and get Love, Actually, The Straight Story and Radio Flyer. Really.

Have you ever seen Lone Star State of Mind? It's a hilarious movie, especially if you've spent any time at all in small Texas towns.

Submitted by Anonymous User on August 2, 2007 - 12:56pm.

All very recent movies. Nice though. Do you not like older movies, or haven't you had a chance to see them? I can't even imagine making such a list without a Hitchcock or two.

Good list. The Machinist is definitely an underrated film. Here's a list I just made: http://eriksmovies.blogspot.com/2007/08/26-movies-to-watch-or-not-watch-in.html

I'm horrified--horrified, I tell you--that no one, including me, included PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT.

Yeah, this popped into my head six weeks later. My brain works bad.

There is a huge flaw in this list; love actually makes the rank but pulp fiction failed it? Pulp fiction is one of the greatest movies ever. Talk about a man's journey to sanctification
