The Mailman

October 9, 2007 - 9:04pm

So here I am, sitting in my bedroom mailing books everywhere in the world. I don't know how many orders there have been. Well over a hundred. I'm taking them in the order they were received, and I'm down to 61 orders. There's a stack of books and envelopes on the desk. On the corner is my pile of goodies to put in the books. Some of the stuff I put in the books today includes:

  • Ginko Tree leaves from the tree Frank Lloyd Wright planted when he built his home in 1898
  • Coasters from Timothy O'Toole's in Chicago
  • Counterfeit money that children make and try to pass off to my daughter who works at a small coffee shop and store.
  • Various music CDs, mostly from Talking Taco Music.
  • The Cohiba cigar bands from the cigars I smoked this summer.
  • Chewing gum
  • A Bit O' Honey candy bar
  • Various suckers and a weird coconut candy thing from Mexico.

Tonight I raided the kitchen, so someone's getting packets of Chai Tea and a honey sesame oriental seasoning mix packet.

I'm enjoying looking at all of your homes. I've discovered that Microsoft's Virtual Earth and Google Maps are not always exactly accurate, but I get close. Here's a couple that interested me tonight.

This guy lives right on Pismo beach. I'd heard of Pismo beach but had no idea where it was.

And here is someone who lives in a building just a couple of blocks away from the Capital in D.C.

61 orders to go. A few keep trickling in, but I'm making progress. I'm going to do this every night until I get them all done. It's fun in a weird sort of way. A new experience. I will tell you that shipping things is lot of work. If I wasn't stuffing the pages with stuff, I'd die from boredom.

I got my books and surprise today - thanks. I hadn't held a communion wafer in my hand in years, although they're what I started out on. Real wine too. Although I will say that wine has continued to be a regular part of my life long after communion wafers ceased to be.

P.S. Gosh, I love the way that you love words. And football. Go Cowboys, except on November 29.

I hope you're making some kind of profit now, though.

I got my books today, too. My gift is a page from Peanuts - timeless.
I'm happily sharing the essays with my little family.

Since you asked, we hate what Disney has done to Florida (see TEAM RODENT, by Carl Hiaason) but we do love going to Epcot -

Thank you for sharing your thoughts as they continue to open our eyes, reinforce convictions, clarify what once seemed vague.

I haven't gotten around to ordering a book, but I will...

In the meantime, I can't help but thinking that this crazy, personal book sending is a much more fitting "end" to your book than even selling out at Eerdmans. They would have never looked at all the homes on googlemap. The blessings are multiplied!

Peace to you and your family.

I got my books yesterday! My surprise was a purple pressed flower! Especially nice because most of the flowers here are in fall colors right now. It's chrysanthemum season here. Anyway I think it's really neat that you are making this so personal. Thanks and I look forward to reading my copy and choosing who to gift with the second one that I bought.

Peace, Megan (from Colonie, NY)

I will be ordering mine soon, and I am not sure there is much to see at my house on the earth map. Just me in a condo next to a safeway.

Blessings,

Carl

How funny. I was wondering if you or the other person would come and notice your house.

Sure, send me an email. You can send me a check and I'll mail you a book. And I won't even need to wait until the check arrives. I'll send it right away. (Well, as soon as I can get to it.)

Gordon - I sent you a little exchange gift of my own yesterday. It just didn't seem fair that you should send something with my book and I give you nothing in return. Enjoy!

I'm waiting to order my copy until you aren't buried...like when life gets slow and dull between Christmas and Easter. Or for my birthday (which is next month), if I can't wait any longer. I loveloveLOVE the idea that you are looking everyone up on GoogleMaps; sounds like something I'd do. Unfortunately, the name of my town is 'cooler' than the actual place is. ;-)

i dreamt a couple of months or so back that someone sent me figs from pismo beach. now, i had heard of pismo beach, but i had no idea whether they had figs there or what the dream might mean, so i googled "figs pismo beach" and came across an article by alastair bland in which i discovered that yes, there are figs in pismo beach. the greater message i received from the article (you can read it online at http://www.thelongtriphome.com/articles-rlt-bland2.html) was about trust and following one's dream.

RLP,

You look almost presidential sitting at that desk and working away. I would say you are probably more like a retired president, who just finished his memoirs.

Hey Gordon, got my book yesterday, thanks for the Mexican eatery sticker!!
Also, you mentioned you couldn't find my house on Google Earth. I live in the sticks my friend. About 12 miles west of Alexandria, off of Hwy 28W. Nothing much to see but trees!!
Anyway, I will treasure your book and personal note.

Got my book this week. Thanks for the note and CD; anytime you're in Washington, let me know so I can give you the nickel and dime tour. You can see how close we are to all the sights. :)
