Monday at Viva

August 22, 2005 - 10:22am

Hello. It's Monday, the girls are ALL in school, and I'm sitting upstairs at Viva writing and working on this site. Viva has a wireless Internet connection, and I like writing here. It feels right, and I don't have the distractions of being at home.

RLP user "revsparker" has posted a part of a conversation that took place in the chatroom here recently.

So let me tell you a little more about the audio book. Last week I told you that I went to a local studio to begin recording an audio version of my Christmas story. That was an experience. Who knew that it would be so hard to read the exact words of the text, go slowly, execute good interpretive reading technique, but also sound like you are speaking naturally. Ben King of Talking Taco Music has composed some wonderful guitar music for the audio book. I was knocked out when he played some for me.

And yes, I plan to put some sample mp3 here in the near future.

I'm thinking of using this image
on the cover of the audio book.

The recording studio was in the home of Covita, one of the members of the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble. Their work includes a series of CDs that revive an ancient sacred music from South America and "Scriptures," a CD inspired by ancient Christian, Jewish, and Islamic texts. Very interesting stuff.

Anyway, I tried to be as professional as possible, but I didn't know what the heck I was doing. I'm going back to the studio Wednesday, hopefully to finish recording the words. Then Ben will add the music. We're determined to get this thing done well before Christmas. I'll get Ben to snap a picture of me behind the microphone on Wednesday so you can get a good laugh. ;-)

I talked with Matt Sturges this morning, and there will be a couple of new things here soon. If you are a user, you'll be able to view the entire list of registered users, as well as see the list of who is currently online at rlp. If you are a user, make sure you enter your blog address in your profile, so people can find you and flame you if they don't like your comments. (Just kidding)

Also, you'll be able to click on a user name and invite them to meet you in the chat room, or leave a message for them if they are not currently online. When you log on, you'll get any messages that people have left for you. Should be pretty cool!

People are asking when the discussion forums are coming. Soon. Matt doesn't like the forums that come stock with Drupal, so we're looking at an outside piece of software, sort of like we did with the chatroom. Matt hasn't given me a date, but I'm thinking days rather than weeks.

Finally, a word about email. My inbox is 130 messages in it. I'm going to try to dedicate some time today and tomorrow to get everything answered. If I get caught up I can usually stay on top of it. Then I have a relapse and get behind. If you sent email, and I haven't answered, hang . I'll get to you as soon as possible.

Looks like a grand place to sit, and ponder.

I once read a few of my posts for a blind aquaintance. I didn't get very far with the process, partly because I felt silly reading alound into my computer and partly because it was (as you say) much more difficult than you would expect. I'm not the best oral reader anyway, as my eyes seem to skip around and I end up splicing parts of words that my eyes are seeing into the words that I am speaking.

Rev Sparker and I were two of at least nine, count 'em, nine of the ordained hanging out in the chatroom on Saturday night. What a unique experience! Thanks for this. We've had interesting times already in there -- can't wait for more.

Oh, and what were the nine doing? -- Procrastinating. What fun! (Hey! Look Busy!)

Yup, there were nine of them. Only a few of us non-preachers. It was great! Thanks for providing a venue for good conversation.

Matt seems to know what he is doing, but for my 2cents PunBB is the best BB out there.

I am sending power prayers your way as you write--I am still recuperating from the Listening Prayer essay..."Longing is the sharp tang on the edge of joy that turns it from storybook suger to an aged and robust wine of the soul. Thank God a part of these three always remain with us.  God save us from complete consummation."  I love that!  Not just because I am aging and need saving, but it is beautiful writing that makes me feel better about the world and all that is in it. What a gift. Thank you again.

Who is that great guy that makes that possible?

Fortunately, the people who read your audio book(s) won't be picky about how professionally you execute the reading. They'll just be delighted to have it to listen to and be inspired by.

That pic of Viva makes it look really quaint and inviting!

oops, I'm not logged in any more. This is Wandering Willow. http://blogs.salon.com/0003947

I see that the user list is now up. I'm glad because I'd much rather lurk and read about others than post myself. :)

It's interesting to see how things have developed with you since I first started checking in here. I've been reading off and on since November I believe. I can totally relate to the audio thing, it's like allowing my son to make a webcam movie of me for the blog, I keep saying, "Stop, wait, ok, no, dough, start again." And of course with visuals, you have to worry about the hair, so at least you can count yourself lucky on that point.

That anonymous user was me, Tom Reindl. I forgot to sign in, and this comment will show me as anonymous again. :)

I remember that place! Though, I don't think it was called Viva, way-back-when.
