Day Two at the Studio

August 24, 2005 - 7:46pm

We finished with the reading portion of the audio book today. I wish I could do the first day over. I was much more comfortable today, and really got into the story. Here's a picture from today:

Ben King is in the foreground. He's producing this thing, I guess. The truth is, I don't really know what a producer does. Ben runs a record label, and I'm pretty much doing whatever he tells me to do. I guess that makes him the producer. Covita is running the computer and sound equipment. As I mentioned before, she's a serious musician with a number of interesting CDs out.

Yeah, the studio is in Covita's house, but she's got great equipment and a Macintosh, so you'll never know the difference!

So here's what's next. Tuesday Ben is going to do the music tracks. Then we mix it and ship it off to a company in Austin. They're doing the cover and making the CDs. Ben and Covita have been doing this kind of thing for years, so I'm in good hands!

After we mix it, I'm going to put a chapter online in an mp3 file. Until then, here's a short little file that's kind of funny. Just one of about a thousand mistakes I made. At times it felt like I was averaging about one paragraph per take. One thing is for sure, my admiration of the serious professionals who know how to read for an audience has increased greatly. I'm not horrible, but I'm not that good. I will say that most of the time I did better than this clip would indicate!

Definitely love the accent!  Can't wait for it to be completed.  Do you know if it will be on sale at Viva?

Sounds like the recording's going to be great! Didn't ever forsee you sitting in a studio, recording one of your stories when you started this blog did you? Congratulations. It's great to see good things come to those with talent.

Congrats Gordon. You'll get more comfortable and at ease as time goes on. But you are already a natural for the dialog and accent flavor. Can't wait to see where this goes.

Sounds great! Recording stories sounds like fun. I'm looking forward to making sure my best friend, out in Palestine, Texas, gets ahold of a copy for Christmas.

I really liked it.
You know how when you read someone's work you get a mental picture of them in your mind?  For me it includes their voice.  Often the picture and voice will wildly miss reality when you finally get a chance to hear and see the person.  In a similar situation, I was stunned when I saw the Car Talk guys on Jay Leno for the first time, because they looked *nothing* like I had pictured them.  It practically ruined their radio show for me. :-)  Anyway, it was nice to hear your real voice instead of the one in my head.  It goes nicely with your picture, though as a Yankee I'll have to remember to add your bit of Texas twang to my mental audio tape... Good luck with the recording!

You sure do have an accent! That was a short clip, but you sounded like the people from south central Louisiana, especially on the word "tough". Does everyone in San Antonio talk like that? Have you ever been to the ice skating rink in the mall?

I have SAVAE's "Ancient Echoes" CD- love it. Covita's voice particularly is so warm.
Thanks for the blog. Blessings on your household-

Oh man I was really worried about you until I realized I had "winamp" set to "repeat." :)

Great! I can't wait!

And if you've ever watched the extras on a lot of DVDs these days, you'll know that even the "pros" make a lot of mistakes, too. Sometimes it's a wonder some scenes got shot or voiced (the animated stuff) at all :-)
