Audio Files

I've got a number of things planned for this site. Book reviews and a bookstore are coming soon. Christian Century will be launching a blog here, featuring some of their best writers. That's going to be very cool. Many people only know Christianity from television or perhaps from a bad experience or two. Christian Century is a magazine for thinking people. I'm very excited about that.

Six months ago I began wondering about creating audio files and offering them here. I'm really hoping to do a podcast at some time in the future. So I bought an MBox and spent a little time learning to use it. I'm just beginning, but I know how to lay down tracks and mix them. Editing is still hard, but I'm getting there.

So here's my first attempt at an audio production of an essay. I recorded this essay from February of 2004. Remember, this is my FIRST try. After I was done, I realized I slurred the word "through" in one part. But I'm am not good enough yet to go in and fix just one word. Also, the music intro and exit is a little plain and obvious. Oh well, you gotta start somewhere.

When an author reads something he or she wrote, you get to hear the words the way they were imagined. I try to write so that my prose sounds good. I read everything out loud. It's the only way I can keep hearing it fresh. So anyway, this is how I imagined this thing sounding.

The music is from Ben King's CD, "Rio Grande Romeos." Actually I grabbed it to see if I could figure out how to have a musical intro. After I had played with it, I ended up liking the sound so I kept it. I'm pretty sure Ben is okay with this.

Hey Ben, is it okay if I use your music for an audio file? If you don't say anything, I'll take that as a yes.

(Okay seriously, Ben's a friend and he's cool with me doing this.)

The mp3 file is 3.3 megabytes. PC users can right click to download the file (I don't know how Mac people do that), or just click to listen. It isn't a streaming file so you'll have to wait until it loads.

peace,

rlp

Hey Gordon, Great job.

BTW, Mac users Control+click with the mouse (or right click if they have a compatible two button mouse) and select "Download Linked File".

I'm excited about Christian Century being on the website. Who would've thunk!

RLP: Yes it's ok to use "Rio Grande Romeos." Meanwhile, I've been meaning to ask you do you like the old gospel song, "I Am A Pilgrim."
I've been playing around with gospel tunes on the resonator guitar for you to use as a "theme" song for your audio pieces. I just thought of the pilgrim song since you make reference to "pilgrim" in bunch of places. But I've got a bunch of other classic gospel tunes I'm working on for a new album that would be appropriate -- I hope.

book reviews and book store sound good.

Been reading the Blackabys' book spiritual leadership right now - challenging stuff and one underlying theme is taking time to listen to God - and not coming up with own good ideas all the time. That's the challenge isn't it ?

Be blessed :)

1. Nice choice of background music. Nice music, Ben. 2. You have a really soothing, pleasant voice for reading, and a natural way of speaking (after a lot of practice, I think you said!) 3. Nice story. We each have our own little eccentricities that lead us to do whatever we love... searching for all that has ever been hoped among old books sounds like a wonderful passion to me.

Nice! Although the music lead ins and outs (mainly the out) remind me a bit of the old "Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey" skits from SNL... you know, back when SNL was funny. - will smama

I am SO excited about your audio files. For someone with low vision, it is an answer to prayer. You have the most wonderfully unique ministry I have ever seen. It must have taken a lot of courge over the years...just to be YOU and to not remain in anyones "box."

I love the artwork on here. Do you draw these pictures?

Anonymous, there's some information about the artwork on the site. Look on the left side of the home page, the box that starts out with Main, then Home. At the bottom is a link The Art.

The artwork is by a guy named Steve Erspamer. RLP has colorized a few images he's used in the past, but most of it is Steve. He has a clipart collection that's available for a very, very reasonble price if you have need for it. Check out Liturgy Training Publications if you're interested.

I have seen several pieces of art work done by Steve Erspamer on Todays Missal , can you tell if any of that art work is available to buy.

Hey Gordon,

I can show you how to make the file stream if you're interested. It's pretty simple.

Yeah, why don't you send me some information about streaming? I'm not hosting the files. Does that matter?

I liked it :) The volume was significatly lower than most podcasts, though.

Just wanted to thank you, and look forward to hearing more of your readings. You are right, hearing the author read his words is far better than reading yourself. Hope is so important to developing faith. I too like other author's thoughts, but never want to forget the source that they came from.

Hey Preach,  Can you bear some words from a 19.5 year radio vet on your first audio try?  Don't hyperventilate, they're all good words! You did a really nice job, your voice is easy to listen to and you tell the story well (not always the case, some writers are TERRIBLE speakers.  Same goes for clergy!)  Your tone fit the "feel" of the piece.  Liked the music ( a lot!)  try fading the outro in under the last sentence of the reading, it'll make the whole thing feel more like a single unit.  Looking forward to hearing more!

Ooops, put my comment underneath wrong area.....for Mac users hold down control key and click with mouse. You get roughly the same menu as right clicking with PC.
