This is one of many hangers being used as a shelter at Kelley Air Force Base in San Antonio. This is how it appeared on the afternoon of September 15th, 2005. The shelter looks like a small city. There are booths and tables setup to help people connect with banks, employees, family, and government agencies of all kinds. Thousands of people are walking in every direction. Even the Mexican army has shown up to lend support.

Everyone is waiting for something. Waiting to hear from a bank; waiting to hear from a loved one; waiting to hear about money or jobs or something they are hoping for. People are sitting on cots and in chairs, waiting and waiting.

Hey preach,
Didn't you mean September 15th, 2005, instead of September 15th, 2002??

2005, I think. Not to point fingers...

I've been volunteering at the Kelly shelter for a while now, and they have given me strict warnings about taking pictures. In addition, there are signs posted everywhere asking that no pictures be taken. How did you get permission to take this picture?

I didn't notice any signs, not that I doubt your word. I wasn't there that long, just to pick up a family and again to take the son back to catch a bus. I just walked right in and took the picture.

Hi,

I don't know if this is already duplicated by local efforts, but the Underwater Railroad contains a list of resources for evacuees collected all in one place -- housing offers, safe lists, pet rescue, etc. The resource page is designed to be printed out and hung up near public computers. (The idea is to try to reduce the amount of redundant surfing that people have to do to find this stuff.) I'll ask the site owner to publish an email address for submitting additional links.

Re: photo permission... I'm thinking that since there really aren't any people in the picture who are recognizable, that might be why it's kosher. Thanks for the glimpse, Preach.

Waiting.

This places a different perspective on my impatience with trivial issues and waiting.

The next time I am stuck in traffic or behind someone at the grocery store who is writing a check, perhaps my wait won't seem so difficult.

Thanks,

Rick

My U.S. geography being as ropey as it is, could you let me know whether all these poor souls are even now in the process of being re-evacuated in the face of Rita...and are you and yours having to flee??Many prayers for all affected, from this side of the Pond.
