A Light Blazes in the Darkness

November 22, 2005 - 9:15pm

Advent is a time of anticipation for the Christian community. As the days grow ever shorter, we are reminded of the coming of Christ who was a light shining in the darkness. The Church calendar year begins four Sundays before Christmas, a thing that is delightfully counter-cultural. I like knowing that our year begins in its own time, a time dictated by community and history and faithful practice.

Advent wreaths are popular; their symbolism lies in the increasing brightness of the flames. Advent devotional books are also common this time of year, and a new one has come out that is especially important to me. The name of it is, "A Light Blazes in the Darkness: Advent Devotionals from an Intentional Online Community."

I was flattered to be asked to write the forward for this book, but that's not what makes it special. Contributing writers include a number of women who frequent this blog. A good number of them can be found in the chatroom on most evenings. Rev. Stacey, Reverend Mommy, Terri C., Apstraight, Martybethbutler, Reverendmother, See thru faith, Kathryn, Will smama, and Mia.

These women ministers are a part of a webring called "RevGalBlogPals." This is their first collaborative work. Others are being planned.

I previewed an advance copy of this book, and I plan to use it myself as a devotional guide through this wonderful season of light, darkness, hope, and joy. This is good stuff and not written by strangers, but by people you may run into right here!

Wow. I didn't know anything like this was taking place. Looks like I might have to find some other way to get Christmas presents, because I really want this. ;D

Really like the idea of this one, an advent devotional for the blogosphere, by the blogosphere. I've downloaded the book (what can i tell you, I spend my whole life in front of a screen!) and I'm really looking forward to using it. Thanks for posting about this Gordon.

What is Advent, exactly?  I was raised Catholic, and don't remember any such thing.

Advent is preparation for the birth of Jesus. Starts 4 sundays before Christmas Day, and in the church year it carries on until Epiphany (Jan 6th.(or the baptism of Jesus which is a few days later)

It's a lovely time, which unfortuanately is threatened each year by the busyness of the pre Christmas season with all his commercial aspects.

I have been honoured to write in the devotional. I think it will be great to set aside 15 mins a time to read the daily entry - and to pray the prayer and allow God to prepare me to meet Him ina new way this season.

be blessed however you prepare.

That was so nice of you to feature the book! It's probably the first time I realized that somebody besides my own personal friends were going to be reading it! It was so fun to be a part of and such a blessing to be asked to participate.

May I be honest?  As lovely as the book may be, I'm sorry about the cover!  IMHO, its a real turn-off.

you know the saying - don't judge a book by the cover -and on line you wouldn't even have to look at it

happy thanksgiving :)

It's all a matter of opinion. :-) I think the cover is pretty, and I'm looking forward to using the book. The download is on my computer, and the "real" book is on its way to me.

Thanks, RLP, for letting me know about the book, and thanks to the authors! I wish everyone a blessed Advent journey. I am looking forward to teaching my beautiful third grade students to sing "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and thinking up a service project for us to do.

I have started reading my copy...and blogging a little in response.  It should be a good ride!
