Advent is a time of anticipation for the
Christian community. As the days grow ever shorter, we are reminded of the
coming of Christ who was a light shining in the darkness. The Church calendar
year begins four Sundays before Christmas, a thing that is delightfully
counter-cultural. I like knowing that our year begins in its own time, a time
dictated by community and history and faithful practice.
Advent wreaths are popular; their symbolism
lies in the increasing brightness of the flames. Advent devotional books are
also common this time of year, and a new one has come out that is especially
important to me. The name of it is,
"A Light Blazes in the Darkness: Advent Devotionals from
an Intentional Online Community."
I was flattered to be asked to write the
forward for this book, but that's not what makes it special. Contributing
writers include a number of women who frequent this blog. A good number of them
can be found in the chatroom on most evenings. Rev. Stacey, Reverend Mommy,
Terri C., Apstraight, Martybethbutler, Reverendmother, See thru faith, Kathryn, Will
smama, and Mia.
These women ministers are a part of a webring
called
"RevGalBlogPals." This is their first
collaborative work. Others are being planned.
I previewed an advance copy of this book, and I
plan to use it myself as a devotional guide through this wonderful season of
light, darkness, hope, and joy. This is good stuff and not written by strangers,
but by people you may run into right here!
