The Week in Review

December 16, 2005 - 2:20pm

Hello there. I've been away from the blog most of this week. I've been a little busy. My friend Tim was out of town, and we kept his two daughters with us the entire week. So there have been five sisters, as it were, for me get off to school, feed, and get home again each evening. It sounds hard, but I think we entered some quantum state of parenting where all the old rules do not apply. In many ways, life is easier with five girls in the house than it is with three. Admittedly, bathroom availability is more scarce, but they do keep each other busy, help each other awaken in the mornings, take turns fixing each other's hair, that sort of thing.

I sent a mass email out to registered users of Real Live Preacher. I've already heard from a few people that I broke some rules of etiquette. My transgressions were of ignorance and not malice; that much I can say. In future I need to develop a way for people to sign up for an account so that they can use the features of the blog without forcing them to receive an email from me. I'm sure I'll figure something out before I send another email, which won't be until well into 2006 in any case. My apologies to any who were bothered by this.

In spite of the crowds at our home, I did manage to complete an essay this week. It's called "Darkness, Dolphins, and Advent Light." It should be online early next week. This one was TOUGH. Man, it felt like I was hammering railroad spikes with my forehead. It just WOULD NOT come together.

Blogger and rlp user Little Green Friend was in town this week and stopped by the church to say hello. We chatted and had a bite of lunch. I enjoyed it greatly. Thanks for dropping by, LGF.

Oh, something funny happened last Sunday. It was a nice day, and we had a number of visitors, which I always enjoy. And I felt good about the sermon. I really felt that I delivered it with passion and with some edge left in the scripture. So I was feeling happy afterwards, at least until Chris Chappell told me that my fly had been open through the entire service. Nice. I have got to be the ultimate "Charlie Brown" of preachers.

You're not going to believe what I'm going to tell you next. I got a phone call from BBC radio, and they interviewed me this morning at our local public radio station. We talked about the ways in which religion, culture, and politics are enmeshed in our culture. Lovely accents had they. I grant people at least 30 extra IQ points just for having an English accent. I was giddy with delight. I kept telling my wife, "The BBC. The BB bloody C, do you understand me?!"

I sort of like England a lot.

Anyway, I think the show is going to be on the internet at the end of this month. I'll give you a link when I know more.

And finally, discussion forums at Real Live Preacher are finished. So quit bugging me, JoKeR! The only reason they aren't online right now is because I am not sure how they work. I'll talk with Matt over the weekend. Hopefully we will launch the forum section early next week.

Time is running out for the Christmas CD. If you plan to buy one before Christmas, better do it by Tuesday so I can make sure you get it on time.

peace,

rlp

Charlie Brown is not such a bad role model, you know. He's unfailingly kind and loyal to his friends. :-)

RLP I think it's great that you're going to be on the radio here in Britain. Do you know which programme it was for and I can look out for it on our radio schedules. - Happy Christmas to the whole family - Margaret

Submitted by rlp on December 16, 2005 - 4:01pm.

It's BBC 4, but I can't remember the program name. I'll post something about it. It's the 29th of December, that much i know. I am supposed to get details by email well before then.

Oh, rlp, you know as well as anyone that JoKeR will simply find something else to pester you about! ;)

I think it's a programme called 'Analysis' - "Is God on Their Side" . Scheduled for 8.30pm in UK on Radio 4 (29th December) From Supreme Court to what should be taught in the country's schools, religious beliefs profoundly shape US politics. And the sacred also affects American attitudes to world leadership, global problems and war. Andrew Brown asks why Americans see themselves and so much of world history in religious terms, and where this outlook is taking the global superpower. - repeated again on New Years day at 9.30pm UK. Prime Time radio, looking forward to hearing it. - Margaret

That's the one. yep.

rlp, I once got a call from a BBC radio host (I think his name was Trevor Fry or something like that, or maybe I'm getting names mixed up again), who said he found my church's website, noticed that we're located in Trowbridge, CA, and wanted to talk to me about Trowbridge because there is also a Trowbridge in his listening area. So he taped a 5-minute interview with me over the phone. I really wanted someone to walk into the room just so I could say, "Sorry, can't talk; I've got Bristol on the line!"

It appears to me, though, that they only invite the really special ones to have their interviews recorded in a real radio station. For the rest of us, we just use the phone. :-)

You don't know how bad it hurts me that I missed the whole fly thingy. I even sit on the front row for stuff like that.

For those who don't know, if you go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/i/ and then click on the link that says 'Open BBC Radio Player', you can either listen live to the current offerings at the various BBC channels, or ask to hear any program from the previous week that you may have missed. So we'll all be able to listen to rlp! Way to go, Gordon - keep up the good work.

Hey, my approval may not give as many ego points as RLP's, but I will tell you that visited northern Wales and London right after graduating from college, and London didn't do a lot for me but I really adored Wales. I saw Aberystwyth and Dolgellau and Caernarfon and climbed half of Cader Idris. It is probably my favorite place in the world so far. (Though I thought for sure that the bus ride to Dolgellau was going to be the death of me....)

Also, the Welsh language? Really effin' cool. Totally sounds like Elvish to me.

Wow! The BB bloody C? SO COOL! We watched a Hugh Grant movie last night, and I told my hubby that it didn't matter what he said as long as he said it with an accent. Thirty points for an English accent sounds fair. But it's fifty for Scottish or Irish. Congrats and Merry Christmas! Katy Raymond www.fallible.com

Oh, I don't know anything about those kind of moments.
I'm not at all the woman who used public transit for three months so I could save 150 to get my car 'fixed' when all it needed was the radiator cap turned clockwise once.
Nope. That wasn't me. That was the one-armed man.

The BBC rocks! The highlight of my writer's life (so far) was the 2 minutes I spent live in the radio studios -- I think I got in two sentences, but just being there was a dream come true

Hi RLP--I replied to your email and got it bounced back, but here's what I said--

Gordon you are a delight. I wish all your endeavors truly God-given success,
because your humility and insight are always both a model, and a challenge to
me. And a very merry Christmas to you and yours!!
