So I Ran Into Someone At The Coffee Shop

January 30, 2006 - 11:13am

Well, this was a first. I was sitting at Caffegio, my favorite coffee shop and new writing place, when this guy came in and recognized me. He asked if I was Gordon Atkinson, the guy who does Real Live Preacher.

For a second I just froze, my Chai Tea halfway to my lips.

"Uh....yeah," I stammered.

It was a little strange, I must admit. I've become accustomed to some folks out there in cyber space knowing who I am, but this was real life. However, it turned out to be a serendipitous kind of moment. His name is Cristopher, and yes that's the correct spelling. He's a new Episcopal priest and an associate minister at a local church. We ended up talking shop - sermons, church, life, all of that. These kind of conversations are valuable. If one drops on you, grab it if you can. There's always time to write later.

Cristopher, it was great talking with you. I look forward to the next time. You know where to find me!

My office is next to a Cristopher. I asked him last week why his parents left the "h" out of his Christ-bearer name. He said he didn't know, and to add insult to injury, he said he got a card from them in December where they spelled it with the "h". Crazy.

I hope you've gotten a good response to your request for some financial assistance. I have attempted to do same, though the process doesn't seem complete yet in setting up a PayPal account.

Around the church office where I work, we have a philosophy that "ministry is all about the interuptions" - that ministering to people happens in the grocery store aisles, hallways and parking lots of the church, and in the "hey, ya got a second?" moments when people pop their head into your doorway. This was a perfect example of that!

It was great talking to you too! An unexpected blessing. See you 'round the vineyard.

Ahhh...good coffee, good beer, good conversation; three of life's finest things. Good conversation is probably the most underrated of the three.

Luck you. I would have liked to run into Cristopher in coffee shop around town.

I love you, Real Live Preacher, for saying "Chai Tea", and not just saying "chai".

Funny, about twenty years ago I said I'd never be "religious" and while drinking coffee I bumped into a guy, a total stranger. As a result of this chance encounter I am now a priest. Coffee and chance encounters can change your world... keep listening for whwat God is doig with you and Cristopher.

Oh, boy, I wish I could have sat in on that conversation. I bet it was fabulous.
