So What's New?

March 29, 2006 - 10:55am

There are a few things going on right now.

Sage Chapel:
I've been invited to preach at Cornell University's Sage Chapel on Sunday, April 9th. This seems very funny to me because no one has ever asked me to do anything fancy like this. Heck, I don't even own a suit. I hope it's not too formal or anything. Maybe I can borrow a robe from someone. (Hey, don't tell anyone at Cornell that I don't have a suit, okay? Cause that's kind of embarrassing)

Cornell University is in Ithaca, New York. I've never been to Ithaca, and I don't know how to get there. Jeanene and I will fly into some airport, obviously, and rent a car. I guess we'll just buy a map and find our way. I think the nearest airport might be like 100 or maybe 200 miles from the University. OF COURSE I'll take pictures and tell you about it when I get back. Doubtless something funny will happen to me.

Current Writing:
I'm working feverishly on a new RLPD story based on this text. This story will be my sermon at Cornell. I'm not going to have a lot to say myself. Instead I'm going to try to make the gospel come roaring to life right before their eyes. What happens to people after that is really not my business, thank goodness.

I got the idea behind my interpretation of this text from Walter Rauschenbusch. I'll post the finished story here of course.

Audio File Available:
I've put a new audio file sample online. This one is my Jeanene and I sitting around chatting about Real Live Preacher and how it has changed our lives. It's DEFINITELY conversational with laughing and goofing around. We're silly people.

Book Reviews:
I am about to open the Book Review Section to anyone who wants to submit a review. I think that's about a week away. You'll be able to email me a review and have it posted online. You can submit a link to your own blog address at the bottom of your review, which will get you a little traffic for your trouble.

What kind of books do I want reviewed? Anything and everything. Whatever you are reading that is meaningful to you. Viva Books will edit the reviews and have the final say about what goes online.

Forums:
The long-awaited discussion forums are now online. (See new menu item on the left) The discussion forums work pretty much like the comments. So if a discussion arises from something I wrote, let's continue to use the comments like we always have. However, if you are a registered RLP user, you can launch a discussion topic of your own. I have no idea how this will work or if anyone is interested in it. I guess we'll just wait and see.

Preacher,
Fly into Syracuse. Ithaca's about sixty miles southeast. Beautiful place. You didn't tell us your topic.

They didn't give me a topic. So I'm preaching from the text that I'm using for my latest dramatic bible story interpretive thingy. Mark 10:17-27. Well, I'm really going to have a shortish intro and read the story, letting it speak.

I like the forum idea...I am sure it will spark much interest...glad to hear about that trip...I think you are going to have a lot of fun with that.

When I was in 8th grade, a teacher explained the meaning behind the perplexing "camel through the eye of a needle" story. According to him, the "eye of the needle" was a type of customs-checkpoint that consisted of an small opening in the city wall, only large enough for a camel to pass through after its luggage had been removed.

It was a huge "a-ha!" moment when the analogy finally made sense...though I've often wondered if that hole in the wall ever really existed. Has anyone else heard this story?

Submitted by rlp on March 29, 2006 - 8:22pm.

Yeah, I think the gate thing was wishful thinking, as anonymous said. BUT the idea is right - meaning that the possibility exists. Jesus was way into hyperbole. He wanted to make an impact with that statement, and he did. He followed it up by nothing that God could easily put camels through any opening he wants.

rlp, you and your wife have such pleasant voices, very easy on the ears.

Looking forward to a more open book review section, rlp -- thanks. There's a bit of comment spam going on over there presently.

Syracuse's Hancock Airport is much less than 100 miles from Ithaca. :-) In fact, it's a straight shot down I-81 south from Syracuse to Ithaca. I used to make that trek many times when I lived in Syracuse and would drive to NYC to visit my family.

You might find helpful information about the area, accomodations, and the like here:

Who knows: you might even find something of local interest to throw into your message!

You might give good ole Mapquest a try. Their times are often a bit off, but the directions are usually pretty sound.

Can't wait to read the RLPDV on this text. I'm a financial advisor, in the business of helping people 'build barns'. My friends and I discuss this text often. I am not rich - by the standards here in this town - but compared to most of humanity am quite wealthy. I am very interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Looking forward to listening to you. You'll be great. :)

RLP,
After Cornell, you will be going places...I guess. Wish you the best and know that God will use you for sure.
Have an enjoyable time with wife too.

God bless,
Janet

Ithaca has some wonderful restaurants. My favorate is Viva Taqueria. The weather in upstate New York is becoming springlike, with a high today projected to be near 60 degrees. My drive in to work it was 34 degrees but felt so much warmer since the sun was out.

If you fly into Syracuse, the drive to Ithaca is really nice. It passes through some rolling hills and Ithaca itself is in one of the most beautiful places in New York. If you are feeling adventurous, and like more scenic travel you can set out going west on I90, get off at Geneva and go down the western shore of Cayuga lake. It takes about another 40 minutes, but the drive can be worth it.

Ooh, thanks. Taking a longer, but scenic route is one of my favorite things to do. We're going to go your suggested route!

Submitted by Drewt on March 30, 2006 - 1:34pm.

Hope you enjoy it! It is a beautiful stretch of land, and not terribly hard to follow since you are riding along I90 then Route 89 for almost the whole way.

Great to see new things even through your busyness and travels! Forums, book reviews, sermons, photos, new audio, new RLPDV's!

As always looking forward to your work and creativity.

RLP,

I'm a lurker and an Episcopal Priest in Syracuse who was sponsored for ordination by the Episcopal Church at Cornell. Sage Chapel is one of my favorite places. Have a great time. Don't worry about the suit--Lord knows no one else will. And enjoy the drive. If I wasn't preaching on Sunday morning I'd be there!

The finger lake region of NY is gorgeous -- especially after it begins to green-up in late April. But no matter, if you drive down Cayuga Lake you're in for a treat. Ithaca itself is a jewel. I wish like hec I could take the drive from Rochester (2 hrs. 45 min.) down to Ithaca -- but am already committed that Palm Sunday. Enjoy it -- what better crowd to preach to than a bunch of Ivy leaguers! :) Lauren

What time is the sermon?

I think 11:00am. But I'm not sure.

RLP,

I just emailed my best friend in Ithaca and told her that I may never get to hear you preach (unless we finally, in our annual San Angelo trek to see family) make it to San Antonio, but that if she didn't go hear you I'd kick her ass (I find a little bullying always gets them to church...don't you think?).

Ithaca is absolutely amazing. Enjoy your travels.

Submitted by rlp on April 2, 2006 - 7:39pm.

See now, I like that. A reader who will actually kick someone's ass to get them to come hear me preach. I sort of hope she doesn't come though, because really, how can I live up to that kind of hype? ;-)
