Wedding in the Smoky Mountains

June 22, 2006 - 12:55pm

There is a young woman in our church, a woman whom we all dearly love. She found our church a few years ago and has been a faithful and loving member of our community ever since. She plays piano on Sunday mornings and is a deacon. Her name is Erin.

Now it came to pass that Erin met a man named Ron, and the two of them fell in love and decided to get married, just like in the storybooks. Because of Ron's job, this means Erin will be leaving us and moving to California, which is a sad thing but also a nice thing, since we like thinking of Erin being happy even if it means she has to go to California.

I'm officiating at the ceremony, which is a great joy for me and an excuse to get out of town. The wedding is to be simple, outdoors, and in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Jeanene and I will fly to Nashville tomorrow and rent a car to drive into the mountains. The wedding is Sunday morning. We're looking forward to the trip and considering it a mini-vacation. The three sisters are staying with my parents for the weekend.

It appears that I will also get a chance to meet Will Campbell, who lives outside of Nashville, is quite a famous writer, and is the only person who endorsed my book with a blurb on the back cover. Will Campbell's endorsement was the most affirming thing to happen to me in connection with the RLP book. This is pretty big stuff for me; I hope I don't turn into a complete idiot when I talk to him.

Jeanene and I have not been to the Smoky Mountains. I hear it is beautiful there. We intend to drive slowly, take lots of pictures, and find a famous BBQ place that will introduce us to the style of BBQ that is so popular east of the Mississippi. In case you don’t know this, Texans think they have the best BBQ in the world. Those east of the Mississippi say otherwise. I’m a peaceful man and generally appreciate all kinds of food. It is unlikely that I’ll be tempted to make comparisons. When in Tennessee I will eat their BBQ and love it, I’m sure.

Speaking of BBQ, we will be driving out of Nashville on I-40 going east to the other side of Knoxville, then taking 66 south to Sevierville. Does anyone know of a great and famous BBQ place on that route? Remember, I want the good stuff, the stuff you Eastern folks is always a-braggin on.

Now, as for the blog, there are two possibilities. One is that I will have Internet access where we are staying and will blog my way through the trip, posting pictures of Jeanene and I, Will Campbell (If he’ll let me), mountains, small towns, and sundry plates of BBQ or other interesting regional foods.

Or I won’t have Internet access, in which case you won’t hear from me until Monday when I will post a journal complete with pictures and everything as mentioned above.

See ya soon!

My wife and I were married in Gatlinburg, TN 5 years ago. You'll love it and get a kick out of the "Las Vegas" of the east. There are a few drive through wedding chapels. You have to get a picture of Cupids Chapel of Love too. Try Southern Pride BBQ, 2263 East Parkway, Gatlinburg, Tennessee or Bennett's Pit Bar-B-Que, 2910 Parkway, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I liked Bennet's the best BUT both are outstanding.

Gordon, you don't know me, but I know your Dad. I met him while serving the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marshall. I now live in Greeneville, Tennessee, and serve the church in downtown Greeneville, which is at the top end of the Smokies. I first read and liked your stuff in the Christian Century, and only since then learned your connection to Hollie (sp?).

Here's hoping a shower or two will move through what are the very hazy mountains without dampening the wedding so the vistas will improve. It is beautiful here. Quiet awe is sometimes the best response to some of the views.

Unfortunately, I can't help you out on the barbeque. True bbq lovers in the state will tell you the best stuff begins east of the Mississippi, but ends west of the Tennessee river. Some of the local places in Memphis are tops. So whatever bbq you do get in E TN, reserve the right to make your final judgments after you try Central in Memphis. I guess you know all of it will oink.

Enjoy reading your stuff very much.

I second WH's recommendation of Bennett's Pit. Great stuff. Also, be careful driving through Knoxville. Cool town, scary traffic.

Enjoy; the Smoky Mountains are breathtakingly gorgeous. I used to drive through there several times a year on my way from Oklahoma to North Carolina for college.

Looking forward to reading all about it.

Hey, check out Vanderbilt while you're in Nashville. It's where I'll be heading next year! ;D

If you are going to be in Nashville (from where I am typing) for more than a few minutes, try Hog Heaven, right off West End Avenue, 115 27th Avenue North, next to Centennial Park and the Parthenon. It is a shack, but it is good. Will Campbell is an amazing fellow. Enjoy your trip. - John

You need to ship some BBQ up my way. We may have great Asian food, but no proper BBQ or Tex-Mex to speak of...

Calhoun's BBQ is the local standard in Knoxville, and not too far out of your way. If you're in a pinch, Buddy's BBQ may just be a fast food joint, but they actually have decent TN BBQ. Plus, they have beer - yes, beer at a fast food restaurant. Because they go perfect together, that's why.

Hey Gordon,

Enjoy the Smokey Mountains. I drove through them when I went to a wedding a few years back. They're beautiful.

Enjoy your mini-vacation. You've got to grab them when you can.

Holy cow! Will Campbell!?! His book Brother to a Dragonfly completely blew me away in seminary. Isn't it wonderful to be a scholarly nerd-type (as I am)? Your celebrities are much more accessible!

The Smokies are beautiful. Enjoy your time together...

And...I meant no disrespect by the "scholarly-nerd type" comment...I could hardly speak when I met Rosemary Radford Ruether...

Forgot to add that...

Yep, brother to a dragonfly did it for me too. Change the way I thought about ministry and ministers. Put a rough edge on me, or maybe gave me permission to let my rough edges show. And turned me on to the truly radical nature of Christ.

Okay, I don't feel like such a freak now. I recently met a great scholar/author/preacher at a conference and assumed people would be swarming around him like he was Elvis-- So I was surprised to see him behind me in the lunch line. I actually t-t-ttalked t-t-tto him and we refilled our plastic iced tea cups together.

Have a great trip Gordon!

Slick Pig has some fantastic bbq. It's on E. Main Street in Murfreesboro, just east of Nashville. (http://www.slickpigbar-b-q.com/)
And OkayCity is right, Knoxville has horrible traffic.

I second (third?) the recommendations for Bennett's in Sevierville / Pigeon Forge, Calhoun's in Knoxville, or Buddy's.

There is no good BBQ East of Memphis.

I was in Nashville for a week one time and looked up Preacher Will's address in Mt. Juliet. I tried to call before stopping by, but only got his machine. I drove past his house, but didn't have the cajones to stop in unannounced. I think he had a Jesus fish mailbox post.

Have a great trip!

peace,

Bennett's Pit BBQ originally comes from Colorado. I have met Bennett Shotwell before, and he is a nice guy. Even let my youth group go into his house and sing Christmas carols (in Colorado)

Bennett's Pit BBQ has the best BBQ I've ever tasted, personally. And I've lived in Texas.

I will add o the list of Bennett's fans; if you can find it, Spooky's in Knoxville has some of the best I've ever had

If you go to Nashville... beware, the entire area is set up in a huge circle. HAHA! We went their for our honeymoon, and spent 50% of the stay trying to get un-lost! :) We seriously used 3 maps, and still couldn't find our way HA! It was beautiful though, enjoy your trip!

C'mon people... Bennett's is a national chain... don't go there. Listen, if you want the real deal, here's what you do.

In Knoxville, there's this old man who wanted to open a BBQ shack all his life but he couldn't afford much... so he built this tiny little shack in the parking lot of a run down laundrymat and set up a big smoker right by the road and starting selling meat by the pound... well, as these things happen, the word spread and soon this place couldn't keep up.

Last year, the founder died of a heart attack, but his family and friends are keeping the place going... it is the real deal and for $5.00 they'll give you a pulled pork BBQ plate that will set you free and make you say amen.

In Knoxville, get off the interstate at Gallaher View Road. Go through a couple of stop lights until you see Walmart and Sam's club on your left. Turn left at that light (this is Gallaher View road... the lights before it are Bridgewater and Walker Springs).

Stay on Gallaher View until you are forced to turn... there will be a gas station on your left called Weigles. Turn right at this light... this is Middlebrook pike.

The place you're looking for is about 2 miles down the road on the left... it's in the parking lot of a laundrymat... you'll see a little white shack and a bunch of smokers. If you come to Vanosdale road or Middlebrook United Methodist Church, you've gone just a little too far.

Preacher, trust me... I don't know these people, I have no vested interest in the success of this BBQ stand, but I am from here, and I know that this is the real thing... someday, it will probably be some big chain with this story on the back of some slick corporate menu of the month, but for now, it's family and friends picking up the broken pieces one pork platter at a time, and that my friend, is Tennessee BBQ.

Or, I hear KFC has a pretty good Honey-BBQ sandwich.

This is what I was waiting for. Doubtless all the others are fine, and I'll try to sample maybe three. That's about all the BBQ I'll be able to stand in a short amount of time. But if I can get to this place, I will. And take pictures.

thanks!

I have to agree. If you had more time, and didn't mind the drive, this would be the place to go. I live about 20 min from Ridgewood and savor every chance I get to experience it's awesome flavor. I would even offer to meet up with you for some fellowship if you had the time and inkling

Barbeque I can't speak to, but...
Traffic on 66 I can! The Smokies are beautiful, the traffic getting there isn't so. This time of year 66 is a slow parking lot. Keep your eyes on the mountains, and allow yourself plenty of time to get where you're going. And Pigeon Forge is a concrete jungle of shlock. Brace yourselves. Too bad someone can't take you in over back roads. It's so sad what man does to God's creation...

Hey Gordon.

I just moved out to Sevierville a few months ago and it's really beautiful here. Traffic is awful though, especially now that tourist season has hit. Be very very careful when driving through the area.

I'm not sure what to suggest in regard to BBQ that hasn't already been brought up, however there's a REALLY good restaurant in Gatlinburg called The Smoky Mountain Brewery & Restaurant. I forget if they had BBQ on the menu, but if you just want to go to a really nice place that isn't too horribly expensive, that's my suggestion.

As a Knoxville girl, I'd tell you to find M&M Cafeteria in Knoxville, only I have a hard time finding it myself. It is, however, the best barbecue in town. That's my own not-so-humble opinion, of course.

Submitted by Anonymous User on June 23, 2006 - 11:31am.

I'm sorry preacher-man, but you can't get barbecue there. Real barbecue is available only in the eastern half of North Carolina. And I say this as a vegetarian of ten years. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
