How To Read The Bible #4

December 27, 2006 - 7:23pm

More in the series. The next video is done and will be online in a day or so. And I hope to finish my story, "For We Are Many" by the weekend. BTW, what's with my shirt? It looks like it would hypnotize you if you stared at it hard enough. It's just a striped shirt. What is Google up to?

It's not Google, it's the way that shirt is pixelated at the resolution the video is delivered at.

I'd recommend wearing solid-color shirts in the future. :) (Or Oxfords, the weave pattern is fine enough not to show up like that.)

Oh, and if you submit a comment while the video is running, it resets to the beginning. :D I didn't know that until just now.

Thinking about the first video again, I wanted to mention that at least one publisher did try putting out some of the biblical books separately. Caveats: you had to buy them in boxed sets of 12; only 24 I think were ever done (not Amos); and, worst of all for you, they were the King James version. But it was a very interesting idea - you could take a little tiny copy of Matthew or Jonah and carry it around in your shirt pocket or handbag. Controversially, they asked famous people (not all of them Christians) to write little forewards to each book.

Maybe your series will inspire tiny NRSV pocket-sized issues of Matthew and Amos! Here's a link to the Wikipedia article about the Pocket Canons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_Canons

Rip them out man, like I did. Just get an old Bible and an exacto knife. Make your own pocket canons. ;-)

I'm quite enjoying this video series, RLP. I even read those recommended chapters of Matthew! Keep up the good work.

Okay, that saves me a trip to the bookstore. I was going to hit B&N today and grab a Bible and Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine instead of getting my writing time in; but that would have meant I'd have to make a second trip for whatever commentary you're going to recommend.

BTW, I find "New Revised Standard" a very funny name. Which is it?

Submitted by rlp on December 28, 2006 - 1:38pm.

lol

The Revised Standard Version translation came out in the 50s, I believe. Maybe 40s. Before that the only easily available English translation other than the King James was the American Standard. I have a copy of that. It reads pretty much like the King James, if you ask me.

The Revised Standard translation was updated, revised, language made current, all of that. So it is called the New Revised Standard Version. And the New American Standard - you guessed it - is a revision of the original American Standard, which came out in....um....1901? maybe? Don't remember for sure.

This would all have been so much simpler if we'd been designed telepathic.

This is great--so much education needs to happen for "people in the pews" as relates to bible study. Any way of getting your little video series as a set? BTW--I love your writing generally. Right on! Write on! from asmacintosh in winnipeg manitoba

Unfortunately, moire patterns (such as your shirt) are something you just have to deal with in video. Generally narrow patterns of extreme contrast (black and white) cause problems and should be avoided. I usually notice them on TV when sportscasters or guests come in with contrasty-ties.
