Reading the Bible #6

January 11, 2007 - 6:23am
Viva has the Learning Bible Discounted: Viva is offering The Learning Bible at a discount. They can only get the hard cover, and only in NIV. I was wrong about the NRSV being available. The NIV version is what I have. Regularly $50, they will sell it to you for $37.50 with $3 shipping.

They didn't want me to say this, but they will lose money on this deal. Thanks Viva!!

Okay, here's the next in the series. I made this one #6 and renamed the last video because it really wasn't in this series. I tried a new setting. The echo is too much, but I was in a big room. Also, Gabe sent me a 1 gig SD card, so I wasn't limited to 6 minutes. I'm worried that this is too long. You know how it goes, you tend to fill up the space you have. Let me know what you think. I went 14 minutes. I could be disciplined and keep it to 10. 6 really is hard to do.

Coming next: I reveal the coolest lectionary study group EVER. Seriously, even my atheist buddies will want in on this. There is, of course, one thing you'll have to bring with you if you want to participate. And it ain't a Bible.

Echo is too much and I liked the shorter videos myself.

Great info Minister.

The echo wasn't a problem. Actually for the first 12 minutes I kept expecting the lights to dim and the Gregorian monks to break out in chanting, but then the last 2 minutes when the audio sync got outta whack I just knew the big fight scene with the crazed ninjas was right around the corner. Can't tell you how disappointed I was to miss your demo on nunchukas.

All kidding aside...your doing a great job with this series! Keep it up.

RLP,

Thanks so much for this series. While I initially was bothered by the ehco, as time went by I adjusted and it was no problem. I thank Gabe for the donation of the 1 gig card. I really prefer you being able to say what needs to be said to cover an issue/thought. Clearly you were rushed before. I ask that you do that, rather than being limited by an arbitrary time limit. I do not mind a 20 minute sermon when what is being preached is worthy of the 20 minutes. What pisses me off is even a 6 minute sermon filled with ecclesiastical pablum.

Kinda liked the echo....

Length not a problem, gradually increasing lack of sync more annoying. But, since you're not tap-dancing, I'm mostly listening anyway.

The echo isn't a problem. Actually I like that you move around, it gives us a chance to see a little more of your world. 10 minutes is probably good.

I'm enjoying this a great deal

Peace

Honestly, RLP:

I could listen to you talk about this stuff for an hour at a time, and would do so happily--then again, I'm a college student, so I'm used to that sort of thing. Besides, the beautiful part of this is that there is a pause/play button. :)

I agree that at first the echo was a bit too much, but after maybe a minute, I didn't even notice it.

I didn't mind the echo and I definitely like the increased length.

Half.com has the used versions of the 1975 revisions (the ones RLP showed) of the Barclay commentaries on Matthew for about $1-4. There are newer revisions, but I read that those have a lot of the content removed.

Towards the end it was a bit like watching an old Godzilla movie - your lips were moving and there was no sound and vice versa.

Next series: Real Live Preacher vs. Godzilla!

Just kidding. I have enjoyed the series and do enjoy your sight.

What about Eerdmans Handbook of the Bible (I think it is now published by Zondervan)? It is a great intro to the Bible with beautiful photos, nice introductions to the books and the culture and setting, interesting sidebars, etc. Middle of the road evangelical in content - not too conservative or liberal.

I strongly recommend this for any student of the Bible.

hey rlp, what would you recommend for a commentary on Isaiah??

Submitted by rlp on January 15, 2007 - 9:11am.

Um, I don't know. I'm not the best person to ask about OT stuff. I have some stuff, but nothing I'm nuts about.

Might I suggest a good friend of mine? He is a professor of OT at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary - go to www.pts.edu and look for Steven Tuell listed in the faculty there to contact him...he has written a few commentaries on OT books and really knows the history and the culture and the Hebrew! Hey RLP,

Great series so far.

I'm curious: are you aware of/familiar with Tom (N.T.) Wright's new "For Everyone" series of New Testament commentaries? If so, what do you think of them?

I was introduced to your website by a friend who has your "Communion wafer taste test" video blog on his MySpace - hilarious! I really enjoy your humor and "realness". My 14-year old son also likes your video blogs...he said to me one day, "now, I'd actually listen to a preacher like that!" (he loves the ministers at our church, but his active mind tends to wander when they preach)
Thanks so much for sharing :) If you had a MySpace, I'd add you!

thanks for your recommendations for resources. I picked up a copy of William Barclays commentary on NT themes. It was wonderful. Now I know where all the bible experts that I love to hear get their info. The cat is out of the bag!

I've sense found that amazon.com has many used copies of each volumne in his series on the NT for less dirt cheap. I ordered one of each of the 17 volumes for less than $5 per volume INCLUDING SHIPPING!!!
