Post Your Suggestions Here

Posted: August 17, 2005 - 10:57am

A number of people have given me suggestions for this site or have found a glitch or a problem. I've been getting those emails, but I haven't kept them very organized. If you have a suggestion or have found a problem, please leave a comment here.

Note: One person is having trouble with the new chat software. I wonder if anyone else is. Some people have found broken links. If you find one, please let me know.

Your suggestions and feedback are appreciated.

Thanks,

Sometimes when I try to log in (I"m registered)by clicking "login/register" it takes me to my account info screen, but not to the log-in feature. I try every way I can think of, but it won't come up. Then other times, the log in screen comes up as soon as I click.

When the log in screen does come up and I click it, it doesn't log me in until I click it a second time. That one may be intentional, for some software-related reason.

So since I can't log in successfully, I'll have to sign this comment so you know who it came from. ~ bonnie willow ~

The new site's great. Unfortunately, I can't access it with Firefox - when I type "www.reallivepreacher.com" into the browser, it automatically goes back to the old salon site.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Sarah,

This problem has been reported by some, but I don't know why. I wonder if your firefox is still bringing the site up from its memory cache. Try going to the complete URL:

You can clear your cache by going to Tools > Options > Privacy and clicking "Clear" next to Cache in the list.

How about a user search feature. I've been in chat with folks then lost the link to their web page. Right now I can only find them again if I happen to be on close to the time they were on. Only make it available to registered users. Enable search of all text fields in profile in case someone is looking to see who else is local, if there is a shared interest, whatever.

Thanks for making this site available. The chat community has been a very nice addition.
Peace,
JoKeR

So I'm poking around the blog and read the "About Me" section. Unlike some of your readers, I haven't made any effort to read all of the archives. But when you mentioned that "The Preacher's Story" gets I lot of attention I clicked on the link to see what that was as it didn't ring a bell. Instead of taking me to the particular article it takes me to the Archives. The only way to retrieve seems to be by date. Having no idea when "TPS" was written I'm a bit stumped. I was finally able to find it using the search function, but it would be helpful if there were introductory comments or some indication of which dates had something that could be retrieved. I'm just saying this area could use a bit of work.
Peace,

That's odd. It was working when I created that file. Or maybe it wasn't. Now that I think about it, Matt created the about me page. That file somehow didn't make it over when we imported everything. Strange. I'll fix it.

Also, only parts 2, 3 and 4 appear on the Archive page, and it doesn't appear at all on the Essays page.

it's still broken...but chat works! :-)

I'd like to add my web address and "something about me" to my account page, but I can't figure out how to do it. I was one of the first people to register, and those questions weren't there at that time. At least I don't think they were. Anyway.. how can I add info to my page?

WW, on the bottom of the left menu you should see a "my account" menu item. Click that and then click the "edit" tab. From there you can edit either your account stuff (email and password) or click the "personal information" tab and add your URL and a short description of yourself.

Gordon,
The old Banner headline at the top of the blog is missing for me. When I Mouse Over, I see the words indicating that it should be there, but no picture is above the words "I had this funny picture..." If I right click and try to save it, it says I am saving "Banner", but is still blank. I have never seen it since the new blog, but I can see all the other stuff on the page.

Old Poet, what browser are you using? If firefox, try IE or Netscape. I've noticed that Firefox sometimes does that. Leaves out some graphic. If you refresh the page, sometimes it will bring the graphic you are missing and leave another one out. It would help us track this down if you could try it with one of the other browsers.

OldPoet - I use IE. IT is still doing it, tried refreshing and pop up control and security settings. No big problem or whatever. It is just strange that the banner is the only thing that doesn't come up.

RLP---
I'm unable to get into the chat room.  The system recognizes me just fine ("Welcome Rick").  It tells me I've entered a room.  The "who's here?" window pops up and tells me that I'm in.  But I cannot do or see anything.
I've left pop-ups blocked.  I've disabled the Google pop-up blocker.  No change.
Ideas, anyone?

later in the day:
I can now see the chatroom.  But I cannot figure out how to participate.  Might be the pop-up / spam blockers.  I'll try again from home ...

RLP ---
I can see the chatroom now, but they cannot see me.  Although I get a "you have entered" message, the same message does not come to the chat room.  I turned off the firewall; logged out and re-entered; with and without pop-ups blocked.  Nada.
I'll try from home later.

I do not see the FlashChat message input boxes when I enter the room.  I get the blue screen, and can watch the chats as they occur.  No input allowed, though, and none of the control screens are available.

[Next day]
I checked in from a different computer (this one at home), and had no problem getting into the chat room.  The problem has to be with the security settings on my laptop, the one that travels with me from work to home and back.  I've always had problems with Macromedia Flash products loading properly on this machine.  But I know now that the problem is with the security on the laptop, and will spend odd bits of time disabling/enabling/changing settings to figure out the problem.
See you soon.

My solution appears to be to work under Mozilla Firefox, rather than MS IE under MS NT.  I'm in with no apparent problems.

On your "About the book" page, if you click on the book cover, it takes you to a dead page. The link below the book (that takes you to Viva books) works however.

Hi. I'm using Firefox, and when I go to log in, I enter my user name and password and click the button and it doesn't sign me in, but only reloads the sign-in page. Once I enter everything a second time, it logs me in. This isn't a huge problem, but is it normal? Am I doing something wrong?

Submitted by rlp on September 5, 2005 - 11:10pm.

Truce, I don't know what is happening with you. Yours is the only report of this. Does it do this with IE?

Submitted by truce on September 12, 2005 - 12:38pm.

It doesn't do it with IE, only Firefox. It's not a huge bother, I was just wondering if it was normal. No worries, though.

When I type in my user name and password, it gets rejected so I have not been able to sign in since I registered. I did the thing where you sent a new password but that's rejected too. It seems that the password screen goes blank after I hit sign in.

Just a typo to report. On the opening page of the chatroom there is the word "Smiles" which is spelled wrong.
Everything works great on the site for me so far.

In looking at your "Contact Me" page, you ask not to have your e-mail shared out to lists, etc.One solution would be to use Drupal's "Feedback" module.  It sets up a web-based form for e-mail handling, and can hide your address (which is especially useful against bots). You can even set up forms for just communicating, offering suggestions, reporting problems, etc.

I read RLP using my feed reader of choice (NetNewsWire), however the displayed text is a little annoying. As a result of <font> tags being present in the posts of your content, the text ends up being smaller and harder to read. It would be nice if you could move more of the styling of your site into an external style sheet. Then the webpage would still look the same, but feedreaders and the like would be more free to style their text as the reader desires.

I'm trying to access the stories on "About Me" i.e. The Preacher's Story but it takes me to an archive page that is blank.

How about a discussion panel?  I have this on my group blog(OurKith.com) and it's a good way for people to interact.  Kinda like a very scaled down version of a forum.  Basically, you can post a topic to talk about once a week(each one replaces the old one) and people can comment on it.  Like I said, I use it on my site so go there and take a look if you're interested. Kevin

Could you possibly add another line break between paragraphs in comments? They are harder to read than necessary...

When I click on the user list (new feature) it says I'm denied access although I'm signed in. Why is that?

when i try to read some of the older essays of yours, i can't access them from the Christian Century because they have been archived. is there any other way for me to read them w/o subscribing to the CC?

I'm experiencing a new problem.  From my XP box I can no longer enter the chat.  I can get in from my 98 box, but when I click on the enter chat link on the XP box a new pop up window opens, but rather than initializing it just indicates that some data has been loaded, remains blank, and says it is done.  When I right-click within the window, I get a list that indicates that a movie has not been loaded and a link to "about Macromedia."  Have you ever encountered this before?  It started happening last night.  As far as I know nothing has changed in the configuration of my box (though I'm not the only user so someone else in the family might have changed something).  Do you know of anything on your end that might have changed?  An upgrade to FlashChat or anything?  I'll look for a message in the left column on your blog or here and I'll see if I can find out anything else, but this seems pretty strange to me.  Has anyone else reported any problems in the last two days?  Thanks for any help you can give, and as always, thanks for providing the board and the chat room.
Peace,
JoKeR

My son suggested clearing my cache.  That cleared up the problem with FlashChat.  I'm browsing with Firefox.  Just in case anyone else runs across this problem.

The title is truncated and the space between "Prophet" and "I" was lost in the conversion (I'm guessing)

We think having faith means being convinced God exists in the same way we are convinced a chair exists. People who cannot be completely convinced of God’s existence think faith is impossible for them. Not so. People who doubt can have great faith because faith is something you do, not something you think. In fact, the greater your doubt the more heroic your faith.

I found this quote on quotationpage.com and credit was given to this website. So I have to say that whoever came up with this quote is an absolute idiot. How the heck are you going to compare God to a chair? You can't see God, you can see a chair. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things NOT SEEN! Hebrews 11:1.
